Welding is a core activity in the fabrication factory, undertaken by skilled, qualified operatives working to a welding quality management system under the control of a Responsible Welding Coordinator. It is used to prepare joints for connection in the shop and on site, and for the attachment of other fixtures and fittings. Different welding techniques are used for different activities within the fabrication factory. Essentially, the welding process uses an electric arc to generate heat to melt the parent material in the joint. A separate filler material supplied as a consumable electrode also melts and combines with the parent material to form a molten weld pool. As welding progresses along the joint, the weld pool solidifies fusing the parent and weld metal together.

The ABC's of Nondestructive Weld Examination
Destructive Testing of Welds
I have heard some people say that with all welding, you must have deep or maximum penetration into the base plate in order for a weld to be strong. If you have shallow penetration, the weld is weaker. The deepest possible weld penetration is always best. Are these statements accurate? To keep the article fairly short, the discussion will be limited to arc welding, two common types of weld joints T and butt and two common types of welds fillet and groove. See examples in Figure 1.

Dye penetrant inspection DP , also called liquid penetrate inspection LPI or penetrant testing PT , is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials metals, plastics, or ceramics. The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability. LPI is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity , leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components. The oil and whiting method used in the railroad industry in the early s was the first recognized use of the principles of penetrants to detect cracks.
An understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of each form of nondestructive examination can help you choose the best method for your application. The philosophy that often guides the fabrication of welded assemblies and structures is "to assure weld quality. The application determines what is good or bad. Generally, any weld is of good quality if it meets appearance requirements and will continue indefinitely to do the job for which it is intended. The first step in assuring weld quality is to determine the degree required by the application.
